Visitation and Services
A celebration of life service with military honors will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Okolona First United Methodist Church with Rev. Wally Cason and Rev. H. B. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Boone’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Okolona Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors and Wednesday from noon to service time at the church.
Pallbearers will be Lee Rogers, Brandon Rogers, Colton Rogers, Frank Ellis, John Ellis, and Paul Gregory. Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Fisher, Preston Sullivan, Mike Sullivan, Clayton Corley, Tommy Jaggers, Larry Butler, Bobby Carnathan, Robbie Joe Carnathan, Gary Carnathan, Eric Jaggers, and Cecil Lewis.
– Franklin “Oliver” Ellis, Sr. died Monday, November 5, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Okolona on March 28, 1923 to Elmo Judson Ellis and Hazel Jernigan Ellis. He attended school in Egypt and upon graduation joined the U. S. Army. He served his country in Italy and Germany during WW II (88th Division) and was discharged on November 21, 1945. While in the army, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Europe – Africa – Middle East Medal WW II (EAMETO), Purple Heart, and WW ll Victory Medal.
Upon being discharged from the military, he returned home and married Hazel Dawn Dexter on his 25th birthday on March 28, 1948. They had three sons, Franklin Oliver Ellis, Jr. (Wanda) of Pontotoc, John Dexter Ellis (Libby) of Columbus, and Jimmy Wayne Ellis of Okolona.
Oliver farmed all of his life raising cotton, soybeans, wheat, and catfish. He also owned and operated Ellis Tire Company. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Okolona and a member of the American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, his three sons; 4 grandchildren, Wendy Rogers (Lee), Christy Gregory (Paul), and Frank Ellis (Amanda), all of Pontotoc, and John Ellis (Heather) of Columbus; 8 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Amanda and Colton Rogers, Kinzi, Kelly, Chloe, and Mason Ellis, and Hayes Gregory; 1 great-great grandchild, Allison Gregory; brothers, Durward Ellis (Doris) of Saltillo, Kenny Ray Ellis (B.J.) of Bristol, TN; sister, Sara John Westbrook (Frank) of Brandon, MS; sisters-in-law, Mary Ruth Ellis and Louise Dexter of Okolona, and Delores Stewart of Duck Hill; brother-in-law, Lester Dexter of Iuka; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, E.J. (Pert) Ellis.
