When Joy was born his mother said he was ‘a bundle of joy’, thus providing him with his name. He was born on August 9, 1927 in Olton, Texas to F.W. and Sarah Ellen (Cox) Kersh. Joy and Geneva Mae Bruington were married on October 6, 1945 at Date St. Baptist Church in Plainview. Joy was a man defined by his faith, family values, and hard work. His formal education was limited, having to begin working at an early age to help his family, but he was still a man of great intellect and wisdom. Joy was an extremely hard working man who worked construction for almost his entire life, and also built the family home. He could build anything, do anything, and fix anything. He was a great mentor and friend to his children and grandchildren and passed on his skills and wisdom to them. Joy was a long-time, faithful member of Parkview Baptist Church. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Joy is survived by his wife, Geneva Kersh, of Plainview; his children: Ronald Kersh and his wife, Nancy, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; Karnald Kersh and his wife, Lisa, of Plainview; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joy was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alva Kersh; a sister, Birdie Copeland; and two sons: Donald Kersh and Arnald Kersh.
