John Charles Cowles, aged 77, passed away peacefully June 9, 2011, after a brief illness. Beloved husband of Phyllis Gillespie Cowles; father of Cynthia Cowles Ungemach (Ronald); infant son, Bruce Emmett (deceased); Betsy Cowles Gosnell (Michael); and dear friends Tom and Patti Gimper. Preceded in death by his parents, Murle B. and Mildred C. Cowles, and brother David T. Cowles. Brother of Elizabeth Sprenkle (Roger) and Anne Palmer (B. Frederick).
Husband, father, adoption advocate, humorist, Christian and member of Grace Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. John was the founder and director of Spaudling for Children of Beech Brook; a pioneer in the adoptive placement of school-age children with special needs. While there, he worked with the Cleveland Plain Dealer to launch the Sunday column, "A Child Waits." This column not only accounted for thousands of adoptive homes in NE Ohio but also served to educate the public to the needs of these children.
Following retirement, he continued to touch the lives of many children by playing Santa Claus annually with Berea Kiwanis; The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo; various non-profit organizations and Breakfast with Santa.

Friends may call at Baker Osinski-Kensinger Funeral Home, 206 Front St., Berea, Sunday June 12, 2011, from 2pm to 4pm. Services will be held Monday June 13, 2011, at 11am, Grace Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 7393 Pearl Rd., MIddleburg Heights, OH. Family receive friends prior to the service at 10:30am.
