Visitation and Services
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted by Rev. John Meyer at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 16, 2010 at the St. PatrickÆs Chapel with interment in St. PatrickÆs Cemetery.
Family and friends may call at the Vail-Holt Funeral Homes, Hanover Chapel from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, July 15, 2010 and from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. on Friday.


Obituary
Virginia M. (Goley) Matthews, age 89 of Hanover, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2010 at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital.
Born January 30, 1921 in Madison, Indiana, she was the daughter of Alfred and Gertrude (Ringwald) Goley, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Shannon Matthews on March 3, 1993; two brothers, Donald Goley and E. Alfred Goley.
Mrs. Matthews worked for the Jefferson County Agriculture Agent in the AAA office from 1942 – 1947. From 1963 – 1987 she was an office manager and billing clerk for the Kent Water Company. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. During her youth, she was a member of the CYO at church and the Jefferson County Rural Youth Club, where she met her future husband. During WWII, she donated many hours of service to support the war effort. She assisted the Draft Board on sign-up days. She also helped in registering county residents for ration stamps. She was responsible for collecting the names of all service men and women from Jefferson County. The names were painted on a sign board erected by Post No. 9 of the Jefferson County American legion on the Court House lawn in honor of those who served. She was a 1939 graduate of the former North Madison High School and enjoyed the monthly luncheon and meeting with the 39ers Club. She also enjoyed animals of all kinds.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia M. Naegele and her husband, Kenneth of Versailles; two sons, Thomas S. Matthews and his wife, Vicki of Hanover and William J. Matthews and his wife, Millie of Indianapolis, IN; one sister, Dolores Thomas of Madison; one brother, Edgar Joe Goley and his wife, Ann of Madison; four grandchildren, Thomas S. Matthews and his wife, Mindy, Michael W. Matthews and his wife, Mary, Melanie D. Gividen and her husband, Tim and Jennifer L. Valiyi and her husband, Kashy; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mildred Gilles Ringwald of Madison and several nieces and nephews.

Preferred Charities and Donations
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Prince of Peace Catholic Church or the DonorÆs Favorite Charity. Contribution cards will be available at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home.
